ACTION NEEDED: Pray and Act for Immigration Reform
The House of Representatives intends to address immigration reform in the coming weeks and months. In order to urge policymakers to act on reform this fall, we need to make our voices heard — your advocacy efforts will be critical in October and November.
Bread for the World views immigration reform as a hunger and poverty issue, as people cross borders to escape poverty and improve their livelihoods. Immigration reform will help reduce poverty and hunger among undocumented immigrants.
Christians may not agree on every detail of reform, but leaders, voters, and advocates across the faith and political spectrums agree that the system must be drastically improved. They also understand that if comprehensive immigration reform does not take place this fall, there may not be another good opportunity to work on it again until after the 2014 elections.
We invite you to engage in a range of upcoming activities around immigration reform that are being organized by Bread for the World and its evangelical, interfaith, and secular partners.
- Oct. 12-20: Participate in Pray4Reform
- October through December: Let your representative know you want comprehensive immigration reform. Watch for urgent alerts calling for specific actions targeting Congress.
Bread for the World is involved in two significant coalitions: the Interfaith Immigration Coalition, a loose group of faith-based organizations (Christian, Jewish, Muslim) that convenes for education, information, and action; and the Evangelical Immigration Table, a coalition of evangelical leaders and organizations advocating for immigration reform consistent with biblical values. The Evangelical Immigration Table works to show that while Christians may have very different perspectives on other political issues, they can agree that comprehensive immigration reform is an urgent priority.
Pray4Reform is a project of the Evangelical Immigration Table. From Oct. 12-20, Christians will be engaging in Pray4Reform events taking place across the nation. Bread and the Evangelical Immigration Table are asking churches across the country to host Pray4Reform gatherings or events between Oct. 12 and Oct. 20. Christians around the country will be gathering in Jesus’ name to lift up our representatives in Congress, the immigrants in our communities, and our churches.
Bread for the World members are invited to join either by participating in a gathering that is already planned or by hosting and planning your own event. This guide provides contact information and step-by-step instructions on how to plan a Pray4Reform gathering.
