I am writing on behalf of the Ministries Council of the Church of God to update you on the status of the leadership transition taking place in the Ministries Offices. As you are aware, after 12 years of diligent and faithful leadership, Dr. Ronald Duncan will be retiring this summer from the position of General Director. In the last 18 months, both the Ministries Council and the Succession Committee have worked diligently and prayerfully in seeking a successor.
On March 22nd, during its spring meeting in Anderson, Indiana, the Ministries Council unanimously approved the candidate presented by the Succession Committee to be the next General Director of our Movement, Reverend Jim Lyon. Jim is now spending time in prayer and reflection with regard to the vital ministry for this critical moment in the life of the Church of God. In order to honor this process, the Ministry Council has decided to delay any further announcement until after Holy Week.
Throughout this process, we have been intentional about honoring our earlier commitment to respect the confidentiality that was needed to preserve the privacy of all applicants. With so much at stake for each individual and for the future of our movement, we wanted to ensure that the process provided the best opportunity for personal reflection and the leading of the Holy Spirit. We are continuing to offer prayers and support for our candidate, his family, and his congregation as they enter into such an important time of consideration.
As God leads, we hope to formally introduce our candidate to you early in April. At that time, members of the General Assembly will receive biographical materials about the candidate. As we enter the next stage of this process we joyfully anticipate the participation of the larger church in our deliberations. You will be able to submit questions for the candidate to a dedicated email address. This will also allow time for you to review the information before the scheduled date for ratification when the General Assembly convenes on June 26, 2013.
I ask you to continue in prayer for the process and for the candidate. Most of all, I urge you to pray for the Church of God. God has called the church to be a light to the world. With the leader God has chosen we will become the beacon God wants us to be.
Throughout, may we seek to reaffirm and celebrate the values, strengths and assets of the Church of God Reformation Movement; to represent the interests of the diverse group of saints that comprise our community; and to glorify God in our actions and in our unity.
